CoRE Boat

Description

CoRE participated in the Binghamton Pirate Club's 2012 "Official-like Cardboard Boat Race" with it's CoRE Boat - Titanic II #24. The rules of this competition were to construct a boat using only cardboard and duct tape. Building started at noon and ended at 18:00 EST and racing against other boats began at 19:00 EST in the East Gym pool. The first round (semi-finals) of the race assessed the durability, stability, and buoyancy of each boat. Surviving boats were allowed to advance into the next round. Due to size limitations of the pool, only two boats were allowed in the pool simultaneously. Then the real race began. This final round tested not only durability, stamina, and stability of each vessel, but most importantly, speed. The Titanic II proved to be the fastest and ultimately emerged victorious. An extra re-match round between the Titanic II and the Oligark Fister (another last surviving boat) ensued afterwards. But, alas, Titanic II proved to be truly unsinkable and emerged victorious once again -- the only boat to have survived the perils of the eastern high seas.

Reasons for CoRE to participate include publicity for CoRE (hence the clearly visible logo) and to exercise engineering design principles.

Design

A team of five CoRE members assembled the CoRE boat, implementing the following designs:

• dual layer cardboard to hold weight of the sailors
• a wide base for buoyancy
• a boat completely reinforced in duct tape for full waterproofness
• triangular support beams
• stabilizing shark fin at the bottom of the boat
• signature smoke stack
• rigid stern to hold heaviest part of the boat
• flexible bow to lessen impact with edge of pool
