Project Description
The purpose of this subproject is to create a complete 3D model of Fine Arts building located in Binghamton University.
Project Tools
In order to create the 3D model, Google Sketchup was used.
Summary of the work done
Before starting to model the actual building, in order to gain experience and speed in modeling, I made lots of practice by sketching basic objects such as tables chairs and doors. To save time and effort in the following weeks while modeling the building, I tried to understand the concept of modeling and then, learn all the drawing tools that Google Sketchup provides. To model complex objects successfully, it was important to know where to start and end drawing.
Fine Arts building is consist of 5 different parts (including the museum) and some parts of the building had asymmetric shapes and walls around it.
After gaining enough experience I decided to start modeling the first part of the Fine arts building where the John Arthur cafe is located. In the meantime, I have been provided the building plans of the Fine Arts by Jody Convertino. In order to make a realistic model, I carefully examined those plans.
I could finish the first part of the building after a while and showed the model to the senior project class during my end of semester presentation.
The following week,I have started to model second part of the building where the sculpture studios are located. That part caused me to spend too much time since the ground floor of the building was not laying on a flat surface.
I could finish the remaining parts on time since I had enough experience and knowledge.
Problems Encountered
The most important problem that I encountered was that I had no line of sight for some parts of the building. So it caused me waste of time during the modeling process. To overcome this problem, I viewed the Fine Arts buildings from Library tower and Cooper building where I could get a top view
On the other hand, I have spent too much time to model the buildings according to their original measurements. For some parts, I even calculated the distances between doors, windows etc. I thought it was a necessity to create a successful model but later, I realize that it was not really important if considering the actual purpose of VirtualBU project. People making a virtual tour wouldn't care about the distance between windows or walls unless these are modeled in a totally wrong way.
