This course is a high level introductory course on data mining. Data mining is a very young yet already well received and very hot and exciting area. The research of this area has been advanced to the point where applications have been found in many areas ranging from government agencies to private industries and even to people's daily life. With the background of data mining, it is also helpful to future job placement and further career development.
I taught this course in the Department several times. Every time when I taught the course, the format and content varies. In this Fall, I am going to split the course into two parts. The first part takes about the first two thirds of the course classes in which I will cover some of the basic topics in data mining as an introduction to this area. In the second part which takes about the last one third of the course classes I will ask students to read papers and to do oral and poster presentations on the papers assigned to them. A brief summary of the requirements in this course may be found at the requirement page. For the detailed information about how the format and requirement go, please come to the first meeting of the course.
